Icy World |
|
Icy World is a trick jump map for the free video game Urban Terror. The purpose of this webpage is to host videos/demos that demonstrate how to pass the jumps. The current version of the map is ut4_icyworld1b.pk3.
Custom funstuff is included in this map.
To play the AVI movies below you will need a video codec that is able to decode MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile data. A very good codec for this purpose is Xvid, which can be downloaded for free from xvid.org. Installation is very simple. Or, you may click the YouTube link next to each video to play the video with YouTube. However, the YouTube videos are slightly lower quality.
Demos (files with suffix ".dm_68") can be viewed within the
Urban Terror 4.1 game by first putting them into your Urban Terror
installation's demos folder, which should reside under
the q3ut4 directory. A demo can be played by
choosing "demos" in the main Urban Terror menu or by using the
\demo <demoname> console command.
Most of the demos recorded on this page were made against
ut4_icyworld1a.pk3.
The general idea for all of the jumps is to use a circle-skating technique to gain speed while sliding on the slick surfaces. This technique involves pressing only two keys - forward and sprint - and pointing the mouse appropriately (described below). Left and right strafe keys should NOT be used at all for gaining speed on the ice. The idea is to skate in an arc, always facing sideways with respect to the direction you are moving in. In other words, you do not face forwards. The demos/videos should provide a better idea of this technique. Also, do NOT wear a kevlar vest and always have full stamina when starting a jump (catch your breath). Some of the jumps have brown wood trim on the floor along the walls. This trim is not slick, and if you touch it while you are skating, you will lose speed.
You may consider turning off mouse acceleration in your game (depending on your personal preference).
The easiest way to do this is by
pulling down the console (by pressing '~', the tilde key), and typing \in_mouse 1 . You
will then need to restart Urban Terror for the change to take effect. This setting basically says
"don't apply the desktop mouse acceleration scheme to my in-game". If you end up not liking this setting,
you can type \in_mouse -1 in the console to restore the original setting (and then
restart Urban Terror).

The easiest way to complete this jump is to simply touch the first red arrow and then let go of all controls. If you are trying to get onto the leet ledge (above the regular finish), you will find that it's important to make your landing into the fling-ramp perfect. You should be landing as close to the top of it as possible by positioning yourself in midair using the left and right strafe keys. |

You'll have to gain speed on the slick runway by using the circle-skating technique described above. Avoid hitting the brown trim on the sides of the runway as you are sliding down it. When you drop off the runway's edge and hit the brown wood platform, you should be crouching in order to powerslide across the striped barriers. If you have a decent amount of speed, you will powerslide over all of the striped barriers no problem. |

Pump up and down the sides of the valley until you are high enough that you feel you can clear the gap. Make sure you have enough stamina. When pumping up and down the sides of the valley, make sure you are using the circle-skating technique by facing sideways. Beware, reports claim that some noobs have gotten mysteriously electrocuted while standing on the glass at the bottom of the gap. |

After you touch the arrow, you should be facing the left wall and pressing both sprint and forward. Halfway down the runway you should switch directions to face the right wall. You should be barely hugging the left wall by the time you launch off the ramp. Avoid hitting the left wall at a hard angle. To practice the climb at the end, use the Nooby Drill room. The technique for completing Nooby Drill is described at the bottom of the Nooby Detour & Nooby Drill page. |

Ride up to the top of the berm before the turn begins, stay on top of the berm for a while, then drop down before the final ascent up the ramp. When you come down the initial quarter pipe ramp, make sure you are always in contact with its surface. Make sure to circle-skate as much as possible by facing sideways during the whole jump. |

Do 2 quick prejumps before the walljumps in order to build initial speed. The two prejumps should be done by going in an arc, much like you would do skating on the ice. The further out and higher you walljump, the more speed you will accumulate in the drop (slope). Note that you can only walljump 3 times in a row. |

Then end is tricky. You need to powerslide on the last brown platform a short distance and then stand up really quickly and jump. If you wait too long after standing up before jumping, you will lose most of your speed. Also, keep pressing forward and sprint while powersliding, otherwise your stamina will drain immediately. If you have trouble crouching while pressing forward and sprint, read this information. |

There are several good techniques to conquer this jump. It is important to pass right through the center of the bottom of the bowl on each pump, by going in a cloverleaf pattern. Make sure you land as high in the bowl as possible on each descent. |

This jump should be fairly straightforward as long as you make it into the hole cleanly and then continue to accelerate through the turns. |

Pay very close attention to which direction you are facing as you make the loops inside the tube. Remember to keep looking sideways with respect to the direction you are moving in. In this demo, as the player is going around the top of the tube, she is looking slightly backwards. This may seem counter-intuitive, but this technique works well. |

You will have to keep forward and sprint depressed while you crouch under the barriers, otherwise your stamina will go away very quickly. See this information if you are having problems crouching while having forward and sprint depressed. When you crouch, just tap the crouch button and then let go immediately. The whole time you go around the spiral, you should have your crosshair pointing right around the front side of the blue glowing cylinder. This jump is probably not possible (or at least extremely difficult) with 90% health. |

Going around the loops without flying off is tricky and requires careful balance. When you reach the turnabout (the funnel at the far end), time your jump carefully so that you don't reach the top of the funnel too early or too late. You want to have your feet come into contact with the final glass runway as early as possible, as this will allow you to spend the most time accelerating on the glass runway. To do this, time your jump at the bottom of the funnel so that you bump your head against the brown wooden overhang (at the top of the funnel) slightly before the beginning of the glass runway. |
