Icy Jumps V

icy5d-mini.png

Icy Jumps V is a trick jump map for the free video game Urban Terror. The purpose of this webpage is to host videos/demos that demonstrate how to pass the jumps. The current version of the map is ut4_icyjumps5d.pk3.

Icy Jumps V is a descendant of the original Icy Jumps map (ut4_icyjumps). The original 11 jumps from Icy Jumps are still in Icy Jumps V, but some of the jumps have undergone minor modifications to bring them up to date with the current level of player skill.

Custom funstuff is included in this map.

Having problems playing the videos?

To play the AVI movies below you will need a video codec that is able to decode MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile data. A very good codec for this purpose is Xvid, which can be downloaded for free from xvid.org. Installation is very simple. Or, you may click the YouTube link next to each video to play the video with YouTube. However, the YouTube videos are slightly lower quality.

Demos (files with suffix ".dm_68") can be viewed within the Urban Terror 4.1 game by first putting them into your Urban Terror installation's demos folder, which should reside under the q3ut4 directory. A demo can be played by choosing "demos" in the main Urban Terror menu or by using the \demo <demoname> console command. Most of the demos recorded on this page were made against ut4_icyjumps5b.pk3.

The Standard Jumps

The general idea for all of the jumps is to use a circle-skating technique to gain speed on the ice. This technique involves pressing only two keys - forward and sprint - and pointing the mouse appropriately. Left and right strafe keys should NOT be used at all for gaining speed on the ice. The idea is to skate in an arc, always facing sideways with respect to the direction you are moving in. DO NOT point your mouse in the direction you are going in - FACE SIDEWAYS. The demos/videos should provide a better idea of how to gain speed on the ice. Also important to remember - do NOT wear a kevlar vest and always have full stamina when starting a jump (catch your breath). Also, many of the jumps have brown trim on the sides of the straightaways. This brown trim is not slick and it will slow you down very quickly if you touch it. Therefore, you should avoid hitting the walls/trims.

You may consider turning off mouse acceleration in your game (depending on your personal preference). The easiest way to do this is by pulling down the console (by pressing '~', the tilde key), and typing \in_mouse 1 . You will then need to restart Urban Terror for the change to take effect. This setting basically says "don't apply the desktop mouse acceleration scheme to my in-game". If you end up not liking this setting, you can type \in_mouse -1 in the console to restore the original setting (and then restart Urban Terror).

Noob Filter

NOOB_FILTER_ICY5.dm_68
NoobFilterIcy5.jpg youtube.png This jump involves simply gaining speed and going up the ramp. You should be standing the whole time (not crouching). No jumping is invloved. Try to attack the ramp straight-on, not at an angle. However, you should be looking sideways and sprinting as you go up the ramp. To start the jump, stand on the trim which is on the left wall. Start sprinting towards the right wall. Once you have reached running speed, start pointing your mouse towards the ramp. As you begin arcing in the direction towards the ramp, move your mouse further left, so that you are always facing sideways with respect to the direction you are moving in. By the time you hit the ramp, you should be looking at the left wall.

Red Drop

RED_DROP.dm_68
RedDrop.jpg youtube.png Once again, this jump simply invloves getting speed and running off the ledge. No jumping is invloved. You can grab the ledge on the other side of the gap. Make arcs on the straightaway. Because the straightaway is long and narrow, you will probably need to switch pointing direction at least once while you are heading down the straightaway. So you will actually be making two or more arcs. Switching pointing direction invloves flicking the direction your player is facing by nearly 180 degrees. The less time you spend looking forwards, the more time you spend accelerating.

Green Jump

GREEN_JUMP.dm_68
GreenJump.jpg youtube.png Gain speed on the straightaway and jump at the very end to clear the gap. As the straightaways become longer on successive jumps, you will need to make more arcs (change pointing direction more often). Try to jump at the very end of the runway so that you land as far as possible.

Blue Ramp

BLUE_RAMP.dm_68
BlueRamp.jpg youtube.png Gain speed on the downhill and get enough speed off the ramp to clear the gap. It will help if you face sideways as you launch off the ramp (and press forward and sprint the whole time, including when you launch off the ramp). Because the runway leading up to the ramp is rather short, the experienced player will find that switching direction only once will be enough. Start the jump by having your back against one wall. Start to run towards the other wall, and then slowly start your first arc.

Khaki Curvy

KHAKI_CURVY.dm_68
KhakiCurvy.jpg youtube.png Plan your run so that you hug the walls during the curvy part - hug the right wall as you enter the curvy. While you are in the air after jumping to clear the gap following the curvy, crouch in midair and remain crouched until the end of the entire jump. If you have enough speed you will powerslide right over the striped barriers. You may want to read this information regarding the powerslide.

Thistle Wall

THISTLE_WALL.dm_68
ThistleWall.jpg
youtube.png Get maximum speed down the chute. Sprint while facing sideways down the chute so that you gain speed and retain stamina. Letting go of sprint while going down will drain your stamina immediately. Try to barely hit your head against the ice that is blocking the left side of the halfpipe, then make a hard turn down to go up the other side at a pretty steep angle. The angle and turn at the end after hitting the ice block with your head is the key to this jump. You will want to be facing slightly backwards as you make your final hard turn down the halfpipe.

Golden Tabletop

GOLDEN_TABLETOP.dm_68
GoldenTabletop.jpg youtube.png The key to this jump is landing as high as possible on the back side of the tabletop. The higher you land, the more speed you will retain. Approach the initial ramp straight-on - don't hit the ramp at an angle. However, you should be looking sideways and sprinting as you go up the ramps. While you are in the air after the first ramp, you may want to release forward and use the left/right strafe keys to position your landing. Also, going from wall to wall during the time you are airborne (by accelerating in midair) will make you gain horizontal speed, which can be converted to height off the last ramp.

Climbing Practice

CLIMBING_PRACTICE.dm_68
ClimbingPractice.jpg youtube.png This teaches you how to do a ladder climb. The only key being pushed here should be forward. No jumping, no crouching. Grab one rung, pull up slightly, then let go of forward to fall back down. Immediately after letting go, press forward again to grab hold of the next rung. A good strategy for beginners is to climb two rungs at a time, then drop down a rung, climb two more, etc. The demo shows this. If you keep pressing forward as you are pulling up on a rung you will fall all the way down. If you are falling down often, you should probably be letting go of the climb sooner.

Indigo Twister

INDIGO_TWISTER.dm_68
IndigoTwister.jpg
youtube.png It helps to turn in the same direction throughout the jump. Some people jump into the halfpipe turnabouts, but others don't. It's not clear whether jumping into the pipes helps gain speed. One tip: as you launch off the final quarterpipe, your angle of attack should be straight-on. If you launch off the quarterpipe at an angle, you will not go as high. The demo does not show this, but you can do a ladder climb (like in Climbing Practice) up to the finish in case you don't get enough height to clear the final ledge cleanly.

Olive Gap

OLIVE_GAP.dm_68
OliveGap.jpg youtube.png Do a double jump and do your circling technique in midair as you're jumping to gain enough speed to clear the initial gap. Gain speed on the runway to clear the final gap after the ramp.

Salmon Slide

SALMON_SLIDE.dm_68
SalmonSlide.jpg
youtube.png Jump into the downhill ramp by hitting it clean. Jump across the gap after the runway and powerslide off the final uphill slope by crouching. Since you are powersliding off the ramp, you will not be able to grab hold of the ledge after the final gap. You will need to make the final gap by clearing the ledge with your feet. You may want to read this information regarding the powerslide.

Aqua Bowl

AQUA_BOWL.dm_68
AquaBowl.jpg youtube.png Pump the bowl by going straight up and down its walls, but go in a cloverleaf pattern, turning as you descend and ascend. You should be passing through the center of the bowl each time you drop in. You can do this jump in one pump, but for beginners two or three pumps is more reasonable. Even though the demo does not show it, you can grab the rim of the bowl.

Purple Speedway

PURPLE_SPEEDWAY.dm_68
PurpleSpeedway.jpg youtube.png This is the first jump that requires a substantial amount of skill. Walljump off the striped portion to make it across the first gap. The harder the angle of attack when you hit the walljump, the more speed you lose. Therefore, try to approach the walljump at a perfect tangent. Keep circling on the final platform before the final jump, otherwise you won't have enough speed to clear the final gap.

Orange Chute

ORANGE_CHUTE.dm_68
OrangeChute.jpg
youtube.png A good way to do this jump is to face the inside wall of the chute the whole time, and flicking at the very end right before the incline to face the outside wall. The tricky part is being in a good position and having a slight amount of horizontal speed when making the first walljump. It's possible to clear this jump without walljumping, but beginners will have a very difficult time doing it so.

Brown Spiral

BROWN_SPIRAL.dm_68
BrownSpiral.jpg youtube.png This jump can be a bit tricky. Hug the outside wall without running into it too frequently. Your mouse should be pointing just slightly in front of the center light bulb the whole time. The direction you're pointing during the spiral is extremely important - if you are off from the optimum angle by a few degrees you won't make the jump. Have lots of mousepad available so that you don't have to pick up your mouse in the middle of the spiral.

Avocado Centrifuge

AVOCADO_CENTRIFUGE.dm_68
AvocadoCentrifuge.jpg youtube.png The key to this jump is to have enough stamina at the end of the chute to squeeze in a good jump. Avoid running into the walls of the chute. It is best to be hugging the outside wall right as you make the final leap. In order to have stamina at the end of the chute, you will need good cirle-skating technique - I recommend facing the inside wall of the chute the entire time. Have lots of mousepad available so that you don't need to pick up your mouse at all.

Pink Fling

PINK_FLING.dm_68
PinkFling.jpg youtube.png Get enough speed on the straightaway to make it up the fling. Because the runway is so long, you will want to make 4 or 5 arcs. Face sideways as you go up the fling - if you face the fling as you go up it, you might grab an invisible ledge by accident, which is a bug in the map.

Gray Vert

GRAY_VERT.dm_68
GrayVert.jpg
youtube.png The key is landing at the very top of the ramps to retain speed. You should be going from one wall to the other as you are in the air (without hitting the walls). If you gain horizontal speed while in the air, you can convert that speed into vertical speed the next time you launch off. While you are in the air, you might want to release forward at some point to position your landing using the left/right strafe keys. Launch off the ramps straight-on, not at an angle.

Slate Air

SLATE_AIR.dm_68
SlateAir.jpg youtube.png Face the inside wall of the chute as you go down it. You should be almost touching the inside wall of the chute as you exit it. As you exit, quickly switch the direction you are pointing so that you hit the ramp straight-on, launching perfectly vertical. Gain horizontal speed while airborne by accelerating in the air, trying to approach the far wall by the time you hit the descent. Try to crouch for as little time as possible as you go under the barriers. Tapping the crouch key and letting go immediately is enough. Try to make your turns (flicks) as you are going under the barriers, because you can't accelerate while you are crouching anyways. Also, keep pressing forward and sprint while you are crouching under the barriers, otherwise your stamina will drain very quickly. You should read this information regarding the crouch.

Firebrick Velodrome

FIREBRICK_VELODROME.dm_68
FirebrickVelodrome.jpg youtube.png There are many ways to do this jump. If you are making your final turn around the track clockwise as in this demo, the key is to hit the final berm early, and to descend out of it early.

Wheat Halfpipe

WHEAT_HALFPIPE.dm_68
WheatHalfpipe.jpg youtube.png It's easy to go too fast on this jump and run into the barriers as a result. Don't get too much height when jumping over the barriers otherwise you will hit your head on the overhead ice and slow way down. If you choose to look forwards while in the air when clearing the barriers as in the demo, you can use the left and right strafe keys to position your landing perfectly. The final launch out of the halfpipe should have a perfect mix of horizontal and vertical speed.

Amber Cylindro

AMBER_CYLINDRO.dm_68
AmberCylindro.jpg youtube.png This jump requires near-perfect flicks from side to side. Keep looking sideways during the loops.
